Ce este subjunctivul
Româna are un conjunctiv clar (să meargă, să fie). Engleza are și ea un subjunctiv, dar îl vezi rar, fiindcă arată ca infinitivul fără to: aceeași formă pentru toate persoanele, fără -s la persoana a treia și fără timp.
The doctor suggested that he rest for a week.
Medicul i-a sugerat să se odihnească o săptămână.
It is essential that every student attend the meeting.
Este esențial ca fiecare student să participe la ședință.
Observă: he rest, nu he rests; student attend, nu attends.
Când îl folosești
După verbe care exprimă o cerere, o propunere sau o insistență, urmate de that:

După adjective de importanță sau necesitate, în structura It is … that:
essential, vital, crucial, important, necessary, imperativeIt is vital that the patient not eat before the operation.
Este vital ca pacientul să nu mănânce înainte de operație.
Negativul și pasivul
Negativul se face cu not înaintea verbului, fără do. La pasiv folosești be + participiu:
He insisted that the windows not be opened.
A insistat ca ferestrele să nu fie deschise.
The committee recommended that the report be published.
Comisia a recomandat ca raportul să fie publicat.
Subjunctiv sau should?
În engleza britanică poți folosi și should + verb, cu același sens. E mai puțin formal:
I suggest that he should apply. / I suggest that he apply.
Îi sugerez să aplice.
În vorbirea de zi cu zi, britanicii spun adesea și I suggest that he applies. În scris formal și la examenul C1, alege subjunctivul sau should.
Expresii fixe
Subjunctivul apare și în câteva expresii vechi, încă folosite:
- So be it. (Așa să fie.)
- Be that as it may… (Oricum ar fi…)
- God save the King.
- Come what may… (Orice s-ar întâmpla…)
- If need be… (Dacă e nevoie…)
Be that as it may, we still need a decision by Friday.
Oricum ar fi, tot avem nevoie de o decizie până vineri.
