Mai mult decât may și might
La B1 și B2 ai folosit may, might, must, can't pentru deducție.
| Expresia | Sensul | Exemplu |
|---|---|---|
| be bound to | sigur, inevitabil | It's bound to rain this weekend. |
| be sure / certain to | sigur | She's sure to pass the exam. |
| may / might / could well | foarte posibil | He may well be right. |
| be likely to | probabil | Prices are likely to rise. |
| there's a good chance | șanse mari | There's a good chance we'll win. |
| be unlikely to | puțin probabil | They're unlikely to agree. |
| could hardly | aproape imposibil | The timing could hardly be worse. |
May well, might well, could well
You may well be right, but we need more evidence.
The project could well take another year.
Despre trecut: She may well have forgotten. (Foarte posibil să fi uitat.)
Be bound to
Be bound to + verb înseamnă că ceva se va întâmpla sigur, adesea pentru că așa merg lucrurile:
If you leave the door open, the cat is bound to escape.
Dacă lași ușa deschisă, pisica sigur o să fugă.
There are bound to be problems at first.
Sigur vor fi probleme la început.
Could hardly
Could hardly + verb înseamnă că ceva e aproape imposibil sau foarte puțin probabil:
I could hardly believe my eyes.
Abia îmi venea să-mi cred ochilor.
The news could hardly have come at a worse time.
Alternativ, poți folosi adverbe: almost certainly, in all likelihood, conceivably, possibly.
In all likelihood, the meeting will be postponed.
După toate probabilitățile, ședința va fi amânată.
