Verbele de raportare sunt verbele cu care repovestești ce a spus cineva. Say este cel mai simplu, dar multe verbe arată mai precis ce a vrut vorbitorul, de exemplu suggest sau promise.
Mai mult decât say
În loc de said, poți folosi un verb care arată ce a vrut să facă vorbitorul. Fiecare verb cere o structură anume:

După suggest ai două structuri frecvente:
She suggested going to the beach.
A sugerat să mergem la plajă.
She suggested that we should go to the beach.
A sugerat ca noi să mergem la plajă.
În engleza americană auzi și suggested that we go, fără should.
explain și tell
He explained the problem to me.
Mi-a explicat problema.
She explained how the machine worked.
A explicat cum funcționa aparatul.
