Ceva neașteptat
Aceste cuvinte arată un contrast: ceva se întâmplă deși te-ai fi așteptat la contrariul. Diferența este ce urmează după ele.

She went out despite the cold weather.

A trecut examenul deși n-a învățat prea mult.
although, though, even though
Even though este mai puternic decât although. Though este mai informal și poate sta și la sfârșitul propoziției:
I like her. I don't trust her, though.
Îmi place. Totuși, nu am încredere în ea.
despite și in spite of
Cele două au același sens. După ele nu poți pune o propoziție cu subiect și verb, decât dacă adaugi the fact that:
In spite of the fact that she was tired, she kept working.
Deși era obosită, a continuat să lucreze.
however
However începe o propoziție nouă și este urmat de virgulă. Poți folosi și nevertheless (mai formal) sau but (mai simplu):
He is very rich. However, he never spends money.
Este foarte bogat. Totuși, nu cheltuiește niciodată bani.
