O propoziție scindată (cleft sentence) „desparte” o propoziție obișnuită în două părți ca să pună accent pe una dintre ele. În loc de John broke the window, spui It was John who broke the window, iar ascultătorul înțelege că John (nu altcineva) a făcut-o. Este o structură mai ales scrisă sau pregătită și apare des în discursuri, articole și corectări.
It + be + accent + who / that
Pui în față ce vrei să accentuezi, apoi who (persoane) sau that (orice):
| Ce accentuezi | Exemplu |
|---|---|
| subiectul | It was my brother who told me. |
| obiectul | It's the price that worries me. |
| locul | It was in Paris that we first met. |
| timpul | It was last year that she moved. |
It was Maria who called, not Anna.
Maria a sunat, nu Anna.
What … is / was
Cu what construiești o propoziție în care ce urmează este accentuat:
| Structura | Exemplu |
|---|---|
| What + subiect + verb + is … | What I need is a long holiday. |
| What happened was that … | What happened was that the train was cancelled. |
| All + subiect + verb + is … | All I want is a quiet evening. |
| The reason why … is that … | The reason why I called is that I need help. |
Verbul be se potrivește cu ce urmează: What I need is rest, dar What I need are new shoes (plural, în scris îngrijit).
