Articolele (a / an, the) și lipsa articolului („articolul zero”) arată dacă vorbești despre ceva general sau ceva anume.
| Corect | Nu spune |
|---|---|
| Tigers are in danger. | The tigers are in danger. (se referă la niște tigri anume) |
| Music helps me relax. | The music helps me relax. |
Pentru o specie întreagă mai poți spune The tiger is a large cat. (stil științific).
the + adjectiv
The + adjectiv desemnează un grup de oameni, cu verbul la plural:
The rich are not always happy.
Bogații nu sunt întotdeauna fericiți.
The elderly need more support.
Persoanele în vârstă au nevoie de mai mult sprijin.
La fel: the poor, the young, the unemployed, the French, the British.
Nume geografice
| Cu the | Fără articol |
|---|---|
| the UK, the USA, the Netherlands | France, Romania, Italy |
| the Alps, the Himalayas | Mount Everest, Lake Geneva |
| the Atlantic, the Danube | Europe, Asia |
Fără articol

| mese | We had lunch at noon. |
| mijloace de transport | I go to work by bus. |
| instituții (scop) | Children go to school at five. |
| sporturi | She plays tennis. (dar plays the guitar) |
I earn ten pounds an hour.
