Atenuarea (hedging) înseamnă a face o afirmație mai puțin categorică, ca să fie mai prudentă, mai politicoasă sau mai exactă. În loc de „Planul este prost”, spui „Planul pare cam riscant”. Vorbirea vagă (vague language) folosește cuvinte neprecise (or something, and so on) când nu poți sau nu vrei să fii exact. Amândouă sunt foarte frecvente în conversație și în texte academice. La Lecția 19 ai învățat o parte a acestor mijloace (apparently, it seems that).
Cum atenuezi
| Mijlocul | Exemplu |
|---|---|
| tend to | He tends to arrive late. |
| seem / appear to | The results seem to show an improvement. |
| may / might / could | This may be a problem. |
| sort of / kind of | I'm sort of tired. (informal) |
| rather / fairly / quite | It's rather expensive. |
| generally / in general | In general, the plan is good. |
| to some extent | To some extent, I agree. |
| as far as I know | As far as I know, it's open. |
He tends to arrive late, but in general he's quite reliable.
Tinde să întârzie, dar în general este destul de demn de încredere.
Vorbire vagă
| Expresia | Sens |
|---|---|
| around / about / roughly | aproximativ |
| or something (like that) | sau ceva de genul acesta |
| and so on / and things like that | și așa mai departe |
| stuff, things | lucruri (informal) |
It costs around fifty pounds, or something like that.
Costă cam cincizeci de lire, sau ceva de genul acesta.
Critică politicoasă
Atenuarea ajută când spui ceva neplăcut: I'm afraid there may be a problem. It might be better to wait. I'm not sure that's the best option.
