| Certitudine | Prezent | Trecut |
|---|---|---|
| aproape sigur | She must be at home. | She must have left. |
| imposibil | He can't be serious. | He can't have seen it. |
| posibil | It might be a mistake. | It might have been a mistake. |
| probabil nu | It may not be true. | It may not have arrived. |
Pentru deducție negativă despre trecut, folosești can't have sau couldn't have, nu mustn't have.
Formele continue
Pentru o acțiune în desfășurare sau o situație care a durat, folosești must be + -ing (prezent) și must have been + -ing (trecut):
She looks exhausted. She must be working too hard.
Arată epuizată. Trebuie să muncească prea mult.
He must have been waiting for hours.
Trebuie să fi așteptat ore întregi.
They can't have been sleeping; the lights were on.
