Mai multe feluri de a spune „dacă”
Pe lângă if și unless (B1, Lecția 18), engleza are multe alte structuri pentru condiții. Fiecare adaugă o nuanță:

| suppose / supposing | să presupunem că | Suppose you won the lottery. What would you do? |
| otherwise / or else | altfel, în caz contrar | Hurry up. Otherwise, we'll miss the train. |
| but for + substantiv | dacă n-ar fi fost, fără | But for your help, I would have failed. |
| if it weren't for | dacă n-ar fi, fără | If it weren't for the rain, we'd go out. |
| what if | și dacă…? | What if nobody comes? |
Timpul verbului este același ca la if: după provided that și as long as folosești prezentul pentru viitor.
even if sau even though?
I'll go even if it rains.
Voi merge chiar dacă plouă. (ipoteză)
I went even though it was raining.
Am mers deși ploua. (fapt)
Cu even if imaginezi o situație posibilă. Cu even though accepți un fapt real.
otherwise
Otherwise înseamnă „în caz contrar” și leagă două propoziții:
Take a map. Otherwise, you'll get lost.
Ia o hartă. Altfel te rătăcești.
Condiționale cu „dacă nu era”
But for și if it hadn't been for arată că ceva a schimbat rezultatul:
If it hadn't been for the storm, we would have arrived on time.
Dacă nu era furtuna, am fi ajuns la timp.
But for the storm, we would have arrived on time.
Fără furtună, am fi ajuns la timp.
