Forma negativă spune că ceva nu este adevărat: „nu sunt”, „nu ești”. Cu verbul to be o folosești, de exemplu, ca să corectezi o informație sau să spui ce nu ești.
Unde pui „not”?
Ca să faci o propoziție negativă cu to be, pui not după verb:
I am a student. → I am not a student.
Sunt student. → Nu sunt student.
She is at home. → She is not at home.
Ea este acasă. → Ea nu este acasă.
Toate formele
| Forma lungă | Forma scurtă | În română |
|---|---|---|
| I am not | I'm not | eu nu sunt |
| you are not | you aren't | tu nu ești |
| he is not | he isn't | el nu este |
| she is not | she isn't | ea nu este |
| it is not | it isn't | nu este (lucru) |
| we are not | we aren't | noi nu suntem |
| they are not | they aren't | ei / ele nu sunt |
Formele scurte se fac așa:
- is not → isn't
- are not → aren't
- am not → nu are formă scurtă; spui doar I'm not.
Două forme scurte, același înțeles
La is și are poți scurta în două feluri. Amândouă sunt corecte și înseamnă același lucru:
| Varianta 1 | Varianta 2 |
|---|---|
| he isn't | he's not |
| it isn't | it's not |
| we aren't | we're not |
| they aren't | they're not |
Cum corectezi o informație
Negativul și afirmativul apar des împreună, când corectezi ceva:
I'm not Tom. I'm Ben.
Nu sunt Tom. Sunt Ben.
She isn't a teacher. She's a doctor.
Ea nu este profesoară. Este doctoriță.
It isn't cold today. It's hot!
Nu e frig azi. E cald!
We aren't from London. We're from Bucharest.
Nu suntem din Londra. Suntem din București.
My cats aren't black. They're white.
Pisicile mele nu sunt negre. Sunt albe.
