Cuvintele de legătură (linking words) leagă propozițiile și arată ordinea în care s-au petrecut lucrurile sau motivul lor. Ajută la povestirea unei întâmplări, ca să nu spui doar o listă de propoziții separate.
Ordinea evenimentelor
Când povestești ce s-a întâmplat, aceste cuvinte arată ordinea:

before și after
Before (înainte de) și after (după) pot fi urmate de un substantiv, de o propoziție sau de un verb cu -ing:
I always read before bed.
Citesc mereu înainte de culcare.
After the film, we went for a pizza.
După film, am mers la o pizza.
Before leaving, she closed all the windows.
Înainte să plece, a închis toate geamurile.
After we finished dinner, we watched TV.
După ce am terminat cina, ne-am uitat la televizor.

In the end sau at the end?
- In the end = până la urmă, în cele din urmă: In the end, we stayed at home.
- At the end of = la sfârșitul (a ceva): at the end of the film
